Inside Heorot

    The hunt

    • Grendel, "pointless, ridiculous monster," stalks Hart. (Gardner, Grendel, ch. 1)
    • Iron does not bite him. The Dragon laid a charm on him in his cave of gold. (ch. 5)
    • Any thane who drops their weapon can grip the beast — the tactic of the Stranger. (ch. 11–12)
    • Villagers win when the arm tears at the socket. (ch. 12)
    • Grendel wins at 20 kills or at dawn — twelve years of war already. (ch. 6)

    From the book

    • The novel has 12 chapters, one for each zodiac sign — Aries through Pisces.
    • "Stones; dirt; trees." — Gardner, ch. 1. The world Grendel describes.
    • "The world resists me and I resist the world. That's all there is." (ch. 1)
    • The first thane Grendel takes is named Hondscio (Beowulf's Geat companion, retained from the source).
    • The famous closing line: "Poor Grendel's had an accident. So may you all." (ch. 12)
